Woman Arrested, Charged After Allegedly Shooting Boyfriend (2018)

Melanie Spencer, a Missouri woman who filmed herself shooting her boyfriend in the back of the head in 2018, was sentenced to 20 years in prison after months of deliberation.

Spencer agreed to plead guilty last October to one count of second-degree murder and one count of armed criminal action in connection with the shooting death of her boyfriend Samuel Biggs, 41, in September 2018.

Judge Thomas Mountjoy sentenced Spencer to twenty years in prison for second-degree murder and 10 years in prison for armed criminal action on Thursday afternoon; however, the sentences will run concurrently (at the same time).

Given the lack of a trial and the fact that much of the evidence presented at the hearing was new to Mountjoy, he decided to take his time reviewing it.

Prosecutors painted Spencer as an abusive partner who became enraged when Biggs expressed his desire to leave her.

The state played clips of Biggs and Spencer’s fight, filmed on Spencer’s laptop. Spencer refused to hand over his keys, telling Biggs he couldn’t leave her.

Biggs stood up and walked away from the screen, Spencer trailing behind. “Stop,” Biggs said, and Spencer replied, “No, I’m ready to shoot you.”

Then screams and Spencer rushing out of the house were heard off-screen.

Prosecutors sought a life sentence with parole eligibility.
