According to Adams County District Attorney Brian Mason, the deaths of five people discovered Sunday in a Commerce City apartment were most likely caused by fentanyl, a highly potent synthetic opioid.

And now Mason worries that the same batch of white powder — possibly disguised as cocaine — is still making the rounds in the community northeast of Denver, posing a threat to additional victims.

Mason described the interior scene as “out of a nightmare, like a homicide scene.”

Mason said the five people who died in the apartment most likely assumed they were doing cocaine.

“The evidence on scene was lines of powder on glass mirrors consistent with cocaine and not fentanyl,” Mason said.

At the apartment, a sixth adult and a four-month-old infant were discovered alive. They were both transported to the hospital and are expected to survive. It is believed that the adult who survived is unrelated to the infant.
