The NFL suspended Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Antonio Brown for three games on Thursday for violating the league’s Covid-19 protocols and mischaracterizing his vaccination status.

Two more players have also been suspended.

Brown and Buccaneers safety Mike Edwards have been suspended without pay for the next 3 games, according to the NFL. If the team signs free agent John Franklin III, he will also be unqualified to play in the next three games.

The players have “accepted the discipline and waived their right to appeal,” according to the NFL, and the suspensions are “immediately effective.”

The athletes were represented by the NFL Players Association, which performed a collaborative review with the NFL into accusations that they “misrepresented their vaccination status under the NFL-NFLPA COVID-19 Protocols,” according to the statement. “That review supported those allegations and found that the three players violated the protocols,” it added.

In a joint statement, the NFL and the NFLPA stated:

The health and safety of players and personnel is our top priority. The protocols were jointly developed working with our respective experts to ensure that we are practicing and playing football as safely as possible during the ongoing pandemic. The NFL-NFLPA jointly reinforce their commitment and further emphasize the importance of strict adherence to the protocols to protect the well-being of everyone associated with the NFL.”

Sean Burstyn, Brown’s attorney, stated that his client has been vaccinated.

“Mr. Brown is vaccinated and continues to support the vaccine for any person for whom it is appropriate,” Burstyn said Thursday after the suspension. “The NFL made its determination and, instead of going through the drawn-out and distracting process of challenging the outcome, Mr. Brown wrapped this up promptly and he will use this time as an opportunity to treat his ankle injury.”
