Amazon has given law enforcement Ring doorbell recordings 11 times this year without the user’s consent, despite earlier claiming that it would only do so with authorization.

The announcement occurred in a memo from the business released publicly by Senator Edward Markey on Wednesday, and it is expected to raise fresh privacy and civil liberty issues about its video-sharing arrangements with police agencies around the United States.

Ring has previously stated that it will not share consumer information with authorities without authorization, a warrant, or in the case of “an exigent or emergency.”

Amazon’s letter stated that the 11 recordings uploaded this year fell under the emergency clause, which was the first time the business publicly disclosed such info. The letter, dated July 1, does not specify which videos were provided to authorities.
