A couple in Uttarakhand, India’s northernmost state, is suing their lone son and his spouse for failing to provide them with a grandchild after 6 years of marriage.

Sanjeev and Sadhana Prasad, 61 and 57, claim they spent their savings on their son’s flight school and an extravagant wedding, BBC reports.

They are suing for approximately $650,000 (£525,000) in damages if no grandchildren are born in a year.

Their son and wife do not appear to make any comments.

The unprecedented lawsuit was filed on the basis of “mental harassment.”

Mr Prasad stated that he had spent all of his funds on his son, sending him to the United States for pilot school in 2006 at a cost of $65,000.

He returned to India in 2007, but lost his job and his parents had to financially support him for more than two years, according to the Times of India.

Shrey Sagar, 35, eventually found employment as a pilot. His parents claim they planned his marriage to Shubhangi Sinha, aged 31, in 2016 in the hopes of having a “grandchild to play with” when they retire.

The parents say they paid for a five-star wedding ceremony, a $80,000 luxury automobile, and a honeymoon overseas.

“My son has been married for six years but they are still not planning a baby,” Mr Prasad said. “At least if we have a grandchild to spend time with, our pain will become bearable.”

According to the couple’s attorney, AK Srivastava, the pair demanded the money “because of mental cruelty.”

“It is a dream of every parent to become a grandparent. They had been waiting for years to become grandparents.”

The couple’s case, filed in Haridwar, is set to be heard in court on May 17.
