Authorities said Saturday that a tip told authorities to the parents of Ethan Crumbley, the accused in the Oxford High School shooting, who were apprehended in Detroit on manslaughter charges.

According to Detroit Police spokesperson Rudy Harper, James and Jennifer Crumbley were discovered on the first floor of an industrial building near where authorities had discovered their vehicle briefly before they were arrested by police.

During a news conference early Saturday morning, Detroit Police Chief James White said, “They appeared to be hiding in the building.” According to the chief, they were “very distressed” after being detained.

The Crumbleys were charged on Friday with four counts of involuntary manslaughter in connection with the shooting that their 15-year-old son, Ethan, is suspected of carrying out on Tuesday at Oxford High School, which killed four students and injured seven others.

The couple were considered fugitives by law enforcement after they failed to appear for their arraignment on Friday afternoon.

Shannon Smith, the couple’s lawyer, had previously stated that the Crumbleys had left the city for their own protection and expected to turn themselves in freely.

However, White responded by pointing out that there was no indication that the Crumbleys wanted to be located. He also stated that the couple was assisted in entering the building, which could lead to charges.

“This isn’t indicative of turning themselves in, hiding in a warehouse,” the police chief explained.
