President Joe Biden signed the most notable gun control legislation in 3 decades into law on Saturday, one day after the House endorsed bipartisan gun legislation that was greenlighted by the Senate late Thursday and sent to Mr. Biden for signature.

The lower chamber approved the bipartisan Safer Communities Act by a vote of 234-193.

The bill strengthens background checks for all gun buyers over the age of 21, funds mental health care, and closes the so-called “boyfriend loophole,” which prevents convicted domestic abusers from purchasing a gun for 5 years.

Furthermore, the plan includes $750 million in grants to encourage states to launch crisis intervention programs, reaffirms the definition of a federally licensed gun dealer, and establishes penalties for straw purchases and gun trafficking.

Before approving the legislation on Saturday, Vice President Biden emphasized its significance and recalled being present when earlier gun control legislation was passed in the 1980s.
