After a judge dismissed their requests to transfer their cases to juvenile court, two Iowa students accused of killing their high school Spanish teacher and dumping her body in the woods in November will be tried as adults.

The Fairfield teens, ages 16 and 17, have been charged as adults with first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder in the brutal slaying of 66-year-old Fairfield High School teacher Nohema Graber.

According to court filings, the teens monitored Graber’s regular routine, caught her on her daily stroll, hauled her body into the forest, and battered her with a baseball bat.

The two had separately requested that their cases be transferred to juvenile court.

District Judge Shawn Showers ruled on Wednesday that the 17-year-old will face trial as an adult, dismissing the motion to transfer to juvenile court.

The 16-year-old’s request was turned down the next day.

Showers stated in his decision for the 16-year-old that others praised him and described him as a loving individual.

At the time of Graber’s death, both suspects were 16 years old. If charged with forcible felony crimes, such as first-degree murder, teenagers 16 and older are typically tried in adult court under Iowa law.

Separate trials will be held for the two. Graber’s remains were discovered at Chautauqua Park in Fairfield on November 3. The motive for the murder has not been revealed by authorities.
