Disgraced R&B singer R. Kelly was sentenced to 30 years in prison Wednesday, the US Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York said. His conviction last year on federal racketeering and sex trafficking charges stemmed from his attempts to use his stardom to entrap victims he sexually assaulted.

Prosecutors asked the judge to sentence Kelly, 55, to more than 25 years in prison, while his defense lawyers asked for 10 or less, calling prosecutors’ proposal “a life sentence.”

As Judge Ann Donnelly read Kelly’s sentence, his victims held hands and prayed. Kelly, wearing a tan prison uniform, dark-rimmed glasses, and a black mask, showed no emotion.

Donnelly said she considered Kelly’s traumatic childhood, when he was sexually abused by a relative and a landlord.

“It may explain, at least in part, what led to your behavior,” the judge said. “It most surely is not an excuse.”

Last September, a jury convicted Kelly on nine counts, including racketeering and sex trafficking violations. Prosecutors from the Eastern District of New York accused Kelly of targeting girls, boys, and young women for sexual satisfaction.

Kelly is in a federal detention facility in Brooklyn and will be moved to Chicago in August to face child pornography and obstruction charges.
