13 sexual assault survivors of Larry Nassar are suing the FBI for $10 million each, claiming a botched investigation by agents resulted in more abusive behaviour by the physical therapist, according to lawyers on Thursday.

It is an attempt to hold the government accountable for assaults that occurred after July 15, 2015. The Justice Department’s inspector general concluded last year that the FBI made critical mistakes when it learned of Nassar’s allegations in 2015.

Nassar worked as a sports doctor at Michigan State University as well as for USA Gymnastics. He is serving a life sentence in prison for assaulting female athletes, including Olympic gymnasts.

“This was not a case involving fake 20 dollar bills or tax cheats,” attorney Jamie White said. “These were allegations of a serial rapist who was known to the FBI as the Olympic U.S. doctor with unfettered access to young women.”

Nassar, he added, continued a “reign of terror for 17 unnecessary months.”

White hasn’t sued the FBI yet. Tort claims have to be filed with the government, and then the government has six months to answer. If the FBI doesn’t do anything, a lawsuit could follow.

White talked about the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, in June 2018. Five weeks before 17 people were killed at the school, the FBI got a report about a possible threat. The report was never sent to the FBI’s South Florida office. The government agreed to pay $127.5 million to the families of people who were killed or hurt.

Investigators looked into claims that the FBI didn’t deal with complaints about Nassar quickly in 2015. It took a long time for the police to start a real investigation.

There was a case where USA Gymnastics told the FBI in 2015 that three gymnasts said they had been abused by Nassar. It says that the FBI did not start a formal investigation or tell federal or state authorities in Michigan about it.

During a sexual tourism investigation in 2016, Los Angeles FBI agents questioned several victims but didn’t tell Michigan authorities, the inspector general said. They also didn’t tell Michigan authorities about the investigation.

The FBI didn’t say anything Thursday, but it said that Director Christopher Wray told Congress that the way the case was handled was poor.

Over 100 women were assaulted after July 2015. White said  Nassar didn’t get arrested by the state until November 2016, when Michigan State University police were looking into him for abuse.

There was a child pornography case against Nassar in Grand Rapids, Michigan, where the attorney general’s office took care of the assault charges.

A woman named White said that more than 100 women were assaulted after July of 2015. It wasn’t until November 2016 that Nassar was arrested by state authorities. Michigan State University police did an investigation into him.

In a settlement, Michigan State University will pay $500 million to more than 300 women and girls who were sexually assaulted while at the university. USA Gymnastics and the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee, agreed to pay $380 million.
