The gunman who, according to police, started firing in the parking lot of a church in central Iowa, killing two people, has also died.

Thursday evening, according to authorities, a shooting occurred at the Cornerstone Church in Ames, Iowa, a city of approximately 66,000 people located north of Des Moines. In the aftermath of widely publicized shooting incidents in Texas and upstate New York, law enforcement provided few additional details concerning the attack.

Captain Nicholas Lennie of the Story County Sheriff’s Office stated that at 6:51 p.m. local time, the church received multiple calls disclosing that a gunman in the parking area had shot two people.

Lennie stated that one of the 3 victims was a male shooter and the other two were female victims.

“We don’t know at this point what the relationship between the suspect and the victims are,” he said. “So we’re still investigating that part of it.”

Lennie stated that there were people within the church, including some who witnessed the attack, but no one else was injured.

Other information regarding the three victims and the weapon used was unavailable as of Thursday night, he added. According to Lennie, a press conference will be held at the sheriff’s office on Friday morning to provide additional information.
