  • Starbucks is closing 16 stores in Portland, Seattle, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, and Washington, DC.
  • The closures are due to “challenging incidents” that make stores unsafe for workers and customers, Starbucks says.
  • The stores will close by the end of July.

The closures are intended to make Starbucks stores better for customers and staff, according to the business, mirroring a statement delivered to employees on July 11 by senior VPs of US operations Debbie Stroud and Denise Nelson.

The corporation also provides local authorities the ability to restrict restrooms, decrease seating, and take other precautions to keep staff safe.
