The Troup County Sheriff’s Office reported that a 49-year-old woman who attempted to save her granddaughter from drowning earlier in the month passed away in the hospital.

Stephanie Walker was labeled as critical in the hospital on June 11 after attempting to save her 13-year-old granddaughter from drowning in West Point Lake. According to the sheriff’s office, she passed away in the hospital on Friday, 11Alive reported.

Authorities said Walker was discovered unresponsive in the lake near Lower Glass Bridge Road shortly after 2 p.m. Later that night, they found Makayla Prather’s body.

At the time, deputies described the situation as “a tragic accident.”

Walker was taken to Well Star West Georgia Medical Center and ended up spending a week in the intensive care unit. Authorities said she never managed to recover.

“My mom can’t swim. So, the fact that if she jumped in the water, trying to save my daughter, I know she was brave,” Walker’s daughter, Shawanda Prather previously said.

Shawanda initially told 11Alive that Walker’s kidneys were shutting down and that the relatives was getting ready to remove her from life support because she was “brain dead.”

An online fundraising effort has already been established to cover the teen’s funeral costs. The family is now grieving the loss of another loved one.
