The teen arrested following her 3-year-old sister’s death in Altamonte Springs appeared in court on Tuesday morning.
The 16-year-old has been charged with juvenile manslaughter. Due of her age, local outlet, WESH 2 is not naming the 16-year-old.
The court concluded that probable cause occurred for the arrest and decided to order the juvenile to be detained at least until her arraignment on August 8.
The girl’s mother was there during the court apperance. According to the adolescent’s attorney, the family is cooperating.
According to the Altamonte Springs police, officers were dispatched to a motel just north of Crane’s Roost on July 15 in response to an allegation of a “unresponsive juvenile.”
Officials claim the mother was attempting to perform her duties during work hours, while the teen was caring for her younger sister.
The police report that the mom was in one room using a laptop and a cellphone. In another room, her 16-year-old daughter was monitoring her 3-year-old daughter.
At one time, according to authorities, the mother instructed the teenager to keep the child quiet since she was on the phone. However, the elder daughter is said to have placed a pillow over her sister’s head. When she returned to the room 10 minutes later, the 3-year-old was unresponsive.
The mother dialed 911 and attempted CPR, but the child died.
