Kellye Canty and her 9-month-old baby Kanaan had just dropped her mother off at Harper Hospital for a doctor’s visit. Canty and her baby stayed in the running car in the parking garage.

When her mother was prepared to leave the doctor’s office, she dialed Canty’s number and received no response. She then dialed Canty’s husband’s number, DeMarray Canty. He, too, attempted to contact Kellye Canty but received no response.

“Not too long after that, probably like an hour and a half, her mother had called to see if I had talked to her because she had been calling her (Kellye Canty), telling her that she was ready,” husband DeMarray Canty explained.

This didn’t seem out of the ordinary at first. However, as time passed, DeMarray Canty made the decision to visit the hospital to see what was happening.

“Her mama and I just said she’s probably still in the parking structure because there was no signal,” DeMarray Canty explained. “So, I went down to the hospital.”

When he arrived, he started walking through the parking deck until he discovered the vehicle.

“It appeared at first she was sleeping, so I just tapped on the window,”  DeMarray Canty stated.

When he received no response, he began pummelling on the window, and many others in the car garage heard the clamor and came to aid in breaking the glass till they were eventually able to get inside vehicle. While others were grabbing Kellye, he was grabbing Kanaan.

“I picked him up, and I touched my face to his face, and I’m just rocking him, but his face is cold,” DeMarray Canty stated.

They attempted CPR on Kanaan and Kellye Canty in the garage and eventually got both of them to the ER, but it was too late.

Carbon monoxide poisoning killed both of them.

“So I went in the room with my wife, and I’m watching them work on her, and it wasn’t nothing they can do,” DeMarray Canty stated. “They was already gone.”

Kellye Canty purchased a used vehicle with rear-end damage a year or so ago. She and DeMarray assumed it was purely cosmetic. It turned out that the exhaust system had been effected and was leaking fumes into the vehicle.

DeMarray and Kellye Canty’s first anniversary is April 1; it’s also the day he’ll bury his wife and son. The family has set up a GoFundMe page to help with funeral expenses.
