Frightened travelers “stampeded” through Cancun International Airport after “explosions” triggered a false “active shooter” alert.

According to local reports, “shots” were fired in the Terminal 3 building, but officials have now stated that it was most likely caused by a fault in the bagging area.

Several people can be seen running out of the terminal building in video posted on social media. Individuals are said to have been crushed as crowds frantically attempted to flee to safety.

No official announcement of an active shooter at the airport has been made.

Attorney General Oscar Montes de Oca suggested that the explosion could have been caused by a machine in the baggage claim area.

State Secretary of Public Security Lucio Hernández Gutiérrez stated that no injuries, percussion cartridges, or other evidence verifying firearm bursts had been found at this time.

“Terminal 3 operations were temporarily suspended to guarantee passenger safety, which was never at risk,” the statement said, according to local newspaper De Peso.

The investigation is ongoing.
