An environmental analysis issued this week indicated that some beaches along Texas’ Gulf Coast have “possibly dangerous” water quality, with majority of the contamination coming from feces and sewage system runoff.

According to the Environment America report, Texas beaches were mostly worse than the national average, with 82 percent of the 220 beaches tested in the state being designated as “possibly dangerous” on at least one day last year.

Swimming in contaminated waterways, according to Texas public health experts, can cause significant illnesses such as gastrointestinal illness, lung disease, and ear and eye infections. In 2020, the beach at Cole Park tested positive for fecal contamination 62 times, the most of any Texas area.
