Parent with concealed weapon accidentally shoots self while at Arlington ISD school, police say

Thursday, Duff Elementary School in Arlington, Texas, was placed on lockdown after a parent carrying a concealed weapon was accidentally shot in the leg by his own gun.

Students were dismissed from school at 12:10 p.m. on account of early dismissal.

The parent, identified by police as 55-year-old Anthony White, reportedly dropped his gun and shot himself by accident. His wound was relatively minor.

The school district reported that White was inside the building, near the lobby, when the gun went off, and not in the hallway with the students.

Police and school officials reported that no threat was made and that the parent lacked “malicious intent.”

No faculty or students were injured. The parent was transported to a local hospital following a leg wound.

After White was released from the hospital, according to Arlington Police Chief Al Jones, he was arrested and charged with unlawful carrying of a weapon in prohibited areas and discharging a firearm in certain municipalities.

In the two days following the mass school shooting in Uvalde, five incidents involving guns brought to schools or threats made have been reported in North Texas.
