The Olympics will be held without spectators in Tokyo, according to organizers, after a rising coronavirus cases caused Japan to impose a state of emergency in the capital that will last throughout the Games, according to Reuters.

Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga stated that preventing another surge of outbreaks in Tokyo, where the infectious disease Delta COVID-19 form was spreading, was critical.

The administration announced that venues outside of the greater Tokyo metro area would allow small crowds, and that the strategy for the Paralympics will be determined next month.

The new state of emergency in the capital will last from July 12 until August 22, encompassing the whole 16-day Olympic Games, according to CNN.
