Authorities say a 5-year-old boy died after being left in a hot car for several hours while his family prepared for his sibling’s birthday party.
According to Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez, the unidentified boy was in the car for two or three hours.
According to a post on Gonzalez’s Facebook page, the boy’s mother came back home with an 8-year-old child and the younger sibling, who was “strapped in a child safety seat in the back.”
Gonzalez stated that when the older sibling exited the vehicle, the mother “assumed the other child was also out.”
The 5-year-old usually knows how to unfasten himself, but the vehicle was a “loaner car,” according to Gonzalez.

Gonzalez said the boy stayed in the safety seat while his family prepared for his older sibling’s birthday party.
After two or three hours, the boy’s mother realized he was missing and ran to the car to find him still buckled in.
A sheriff’s office representative said Tuesday the case is ongoing and investigators will meet with prosecutors.
