According to local police, a 9-year-old boy playing with a loaded firearm unintentionally shot and killed a 15-year-old girl Saturday evening.

Officers in Maryland responded to a shooting in West Baltimore on Saturday evening, where they discovered the victim, who has been noted as Nykayia Strawder, according to a statement issued to Newsweek on Sunday.

According to the statement, witnesses told officers on the scene that the boy, who hasn’t been identified, was playing with the loaded firearm when it accidentally shot and hit Strawder in the head. The boy reportedly dropped the weapon and fled the area after it fired.

According to police, they found the gun and proceeded to run its serial number, uncovering that it did belong to a female relative who performs as an armed security officer. She has yet to be identified.

Because he is only nine years old, the boy will not be charged, but charges for adults in the situation are still pending, according to the media outlet. According to the statement, the shooting is still being investigated by local cops and the state’s attorney’s office.

Anyone with information about the shooting should call police at (410) 396-2100.
