The USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service stated Saturday that Tyson Foods Inc. is recalling approximately 8.5 million pounds of ready-to-eat chicken products because they may be tainted with Listeria.

Listeria can cause severe illness (known as invasive listeriosis) when the bacteria spread beyond the gut to other parts of the body. Pregnant people, adults 65 years or older, and people with weakened immune systems are at higher risk for severe illness.

The Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) stated that it received notification on June 9 of two people becoming ill with listeriosis and collaborated with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and state health agencies to evaluate whether there was evidence connecting the illnesses to Tyson pre-cooked chicken products.

Consumers, businesses, and institutions that may have these goods should dispose of them or return them to the store where they were procured, according to the agency.
