Police in Philadelphia are conducting an investigation after a woman was discovered on fire in the Kensington neighborhood.
Alyssa Morales, 36, reportedly suffered serious burns and is currently in a medically induced coma in critical condition at Temple University Hospital.
The incident occurred in the 1800 block of East Tioga Street around 12:30 a.m. on Friday.
Wednesday, Action News spoke with the mother of Morales, Lee Ann Morales. She revealed that her daughter will be hospitalized for a minimum of three months.
According to police, Alyssa, also identified as Bre, has burns on over sixty percent of her body; they are examining a video of her garments on burning that’s been making the rounds online.
Before the fire, a witness had seen Morales arguing with a man and another woman, the witness told police.
“She sees the female that’s with them spray some kind of liquid towards the male and the female, and that liquid then is lit on fire,” said Chief Inspector Frank Vanore with the Philadelphia Police Department.
According to Vanore, the man on fire fled the scene. When the fire department arrived to extinguish the blaze, they found Alyssa suffering from severe burns.
The police stated that they hope nearby people will provide some leads.
The police are investigating whether Alyssa’s fire was intentionally set ablaze.
If the police determine that she was intentionally set on fire, the perpetrators could be charged with arson, aggravated assault, and reckless endangerment, among other serious offenses.
No arrests have been made.
