Venus and Serena Williams’ father condemned the violence on Monday, a day after Will Smith smacked comedian Chris Rock during the Oscars ceremony — and afterwards won an Academy Award for portraying him in the film “King Richard.”

“We don’t know all the details of what happened,” Richard Williams told NBC News via his son Chavoita LeSane. “But we don’t condone anyone hitting anyone else unless it’s in self-defense.”

LeSane stated that his father, like the rest of the audience, was taken aback when Smith abruptly retaliated against Rock for cracking a joke about his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, during Sunday’s spectacle.

However, when asked for comment on Smith’s Oscar acceptance speech, LeSane, who has been serving as Richard William’s spokesperson since his 80-year-old father suffered a stroke, declined to go beyond his statement.
