A 35-year-old woman was sentenced to 18 years in prison for running over her husband in Norfolk, leaving him in a coma with life threatening injuries that ultimately resulted in his death 15 months later, WAVY reported.
Bashirah Shamirah Tripp, a Portsmouth resident, was sentenced Friday in Norfolk Circuit Court. She was sentenced to 18 years in prison, with an additional 12 years suspended in exchange for good behavior and completion of a five-year probationary period.
Tripp went to the shopping center with her husband, James Irving Johnson Jr., shortly after he finished his work for the day. Tripp scooped him from work and an heated arguement ensued.
Tripp threw some of Johnson’s possessions out of the vehicle during the argument. She then drove away in the vehicle without Johnson in it
Tripp did, however, return a few minutes later while Johnson was on the phone. He stepped off the sidewalk and into the road, completely unaware of Tripp. She then made contact with him in her vehicle.
He was thrown into the air by the impact of the crash and struck his head on the pavement. His skull was fractured, and he suffered a serious brain injury, which ultimately resulted in his death.
Tripp collided with two additional vehicles after colliding with Johnson. She exited the car and yelled at the unconscious Johnson, beating him with the car’s broken bumper.
Tripp was arrested after she stated that she was going to leave Johnson at Janaf but then turned around and struck him with her car in a fit of rage.
Johnson was in a coma for the final 15 months of his life and did not regain consciousness. He experienced multiple surgeries and ended up living with a feeding tube until October 2021, when he died of his injuries.
