The World Health Organization labeled the international monkeypox outbreak a global emergency on Saturday, highlighting concerns about fast spreading infections.

The decision to declare the outbreak a Public Health Emergency of International Concern, the highest level of alert the WHO can issue, is anticipated to mobilize extra resources and put pressure on governments to act.

In 75 countries, over 16,500 cases have already been reported.
