According to CBS Los Angeles, the reason for the diversion was a 13-year-old boy with autism who had a meltdown about an hour into the flight. According to other passengers on the flight, the boy became physical with his mother and attempted to kick out the window.

He had been arguing with his mother, who is disabled and was having difficulty getting her son to calm down, according to a source who spoke to DailyMail.com.

There is youtube clip from the flight that shows the teen being restrained and a flight attendant duct-taping him to his seat.

The American Airlines flight from Maui to Los Angeles had to be diverted to Honolulu.

The 13-year-old was arrested in Honolulu.

Unfortunately, this isn’t the first time we’ve seen duct tape used, and the previous one was undoubtedly much worse. A 22-year-old Frontier Airlines passenger was duct-taped to his seat on July 31.
