According to police, a Florida woman was arrested after a toddler in her care shot a 5-month-old baby.

According to a Tampa Police Department release, police responded to a residence in Sulpher Springs shortly after 1 p.m. on Saturday after a caller reported a 5-month-old baby had been shot in the hip. Officers stated that Paula Marie Concepcion Santos, 25, had been the sole adult in the residence with the infant and the 3-year-old toddler.

According to Santos, the 3-year-old grabbed the gun and accidentally discharged it, striking the 5-month-old in the hip. The infant was airlifted to Tampa General Hospital. According to police, the child is expected to survive.

Santos was arrested and charged with child neglect with great bodily harm in Tampa.

“While we’re incredibly thankful this infant was not fatally injured, this should serve as a reminder to every parent or guardian to immediately go and check that their guns are properly secured,” said Chief Mary O’Connor. “Children should not be able to access firearms, and moreover, guns should always be stored in a locked safe with the ammo stored separately. Don’t put the life of a child at risk by being careless.”

It’s unclear what the children’s connection is to Santos.

A five-year-old boy was critically injured in a separate shooting incident in the Florida area on Thursday after accidentally shooting himself with a firearm he found in a bedroom.
