The NYPD has arrested a 15-year-old in connection with the murder of 11-year-old Kyhara Tay in the Bronx earlier this week.

According to NYPD Commissioner Keechant Sewell, 15-year-old Matthew Godwin was arrested and charged with murder, manslaughter, and weapon possession on Friday. Godwin, according to Sewell, is the suspect who pulled the trigger while riding a moped.

“There is absolutely no justification for this tragedy, and we will not stop until all of these violent criminals are off our streets and shootings and murders are no longer the top story,” said Sewell.

The NYPD reports that Godwin and his mother were discovered in a Bronx motel room just before 2 a.m. on Friday. It is possible that they were hiding there.

Godwin has no prior arrests, but in January he was the victim of a shooting.

Police are also searching for Omar Bojang, age 18, who was driving the moped and is also from the Bronx. Bojang is suspected to be a follower of the Muddywell gang and has been arrested for possession of a firearm once. He was already wanted for a recurring pattern of theft.

Monday night, Godwin and Bojang allegedly pursued a 13-year-old boy around Longwood on a scooter, according to police. They say that Godwin fired the weapon, and the bullet struck Tay, an innocent bystander who was not the intended target.
