According to Baltimore City State’s Attorney Marilyn Mosby, a 17-year-old boy has been convicted of murder and rape in the 2018 attack on an elderly woman.
Tyrone Harvin, who was 14 at the time of the murder and assault, was found guilty of first-degree murder, first-degree rape, and a weapons offense, according to Mosby.
Dorothy Mae Neal, 83, was found unresponsive in her apartment after the attack and was declared dead at a local hospital the next day.
Neighbors at the Rosemont Garden Apartments were worried after not seeing Neal for days, according to investigators in September 2018.
Following Harvin’s arrest, police stated that the 14-year-old was doing housework for the 83-year-old Neal when he beat, raped, and abandoned her.
“I don’t think any of us were thinking a 14-year-old would be capable of something like this,” said T.J. Smith, who was then serving as spokesperson for Baltimore City Police.
According to Mosby, Harvin faces a maximum sentence of life in prison plus 3 years. The sentencing date is set for January 2023.
