Three children, one critically, were injured in a shooting Thursday afternoon at the Whitehaven branch library on Millbranch, police said.

According to fire department officials, two boys, age 11, were transported to Le Bonheur with gunshot wounds shortly after 3:30 p.m.

Three victims were later confirmed by police. At 4:30 p.m., police reported that two of them are stable.

According to police, the shooting occurred during a brawl between classmates at a nearby middle school. They stated that a suspect was identified but was not in custody.

Although the mother did not want her son’s identity revealed, she allowed him to tell WREG what happened.

The 12-year-old stated that he was with a group of other middle school students when they were shot at.

“I start running I’m at the back of the crowd and the kids who got shot. I’m directly behind him,” he said.

According to a witness at the scene, a man was seen firing shots out the sunroof of a car. Police have not confirmed this detail.

The victims’ parents have been notified, police said. Additionally, they stated that students at nearby Robert Church Elementary were placed on lockdown for a brief period before being dismissed as usual.

This case is under investigation. Contact Crime Stoppers at (901)-528-CASH if you have any information about this shooting.
