According to CBS Chicago, Mayor Lori Lightfoot declared a day of mourning on Sunday, as police detained and questioned three suspects in the shooting that took place near West Englewood and Chicago Lawn that killed one Chicago police officer and critically injured another.

A female officer, 29, was killed, while a male officer was critically injured. The Cook County Medical Examiner’s office identified the officer who was murdered as Ella French late Sunday.

The car had three occupants: two men and a woman. During the traffic stop, a passenger in the vehicle opened fire on officers, who responded with fire.

One officer was standing near the driver’s side door and the other near the passenger’s side door at the time of the shooting.

From the back seat of the car, the male passenger shot both cops. According to Chicago Police Department Supt. David Brown, the officers returned fire, wounding the shooter.

The two men in the car were apprehended Saturday night, police said, with one of them being shot and brought to Advocate Christ Medical Center Oak Lawn in serious condition.

The female suspect was apprehended by police early Sunday morning.
