According to several sources, including law enforcement, the suspect in a fatal shooting at a Subway restaurant in Downtown Atlanta had a criminal past.

At the time of the shooting, the suspect, 36-year-old Melvin Williams, was free on bond but was not allowed to own a gun because he had been convicted of a crime. Williams has at least eight different bookings at the Fulton County Jail.

Williams is being held in Fulton County Jail on charges of murdering Subway employee Brittany Macon, 26, and assaulting Macon’s coworker and friend Jada Statum in front of her 5-year-old son. On murder, aggravated assault, and gun charges, he was denied bond.

Police verified a statement made by the Subway owner, who said the shooting started over a disagreement about mayonnaise on a sandwich.

Jada Statum’s sister, who was shot in front of her 5-year-old son, said she is fine after surgery on Tuesday.
