6-Year-Old Boy in North Carolina Forced To Attend Court Alone for Picking a Tulip

A recent North Carolina report has made headlines for highlighting a case involving a six-year-old boy who was forced to appear in court for reportedly picking a tulip from a yard near his bus stop.

The article, written by Virginia Bridges for the Herald-Sun and published earlier this month, begins with a description of the six-year-old as his legs “dangled” above the floor as he sat with his lawyer, Julie Boyer, in juvenile court on an accusation of injury to real property in connection with the previously mentioned picked tulip.

According to Boyer’s report, she gave the young boy a coloring book and crayons and instructed him to “color a picture” during the proceedings.

According to the report, the 6-year-mother old’s was unable to attend an intake meeting, which meant he had to appear before a judge himself under regional law. When a judge was informed of the situation, he dismissed the case.

According to Bridges’ scathing report, nearly 7,300 allegations were filed against children aged 6 to 11 between 2015 and 2018.
