The California Highway Patrol said that a 6-year-old boy was killed by a gunshot on a Southern California motorway Friday morning, which seemed to be the result of a road rage incident.

According to investigators, the boy was wounded by gunfire on the 55 Freeway in Orange, California, and was brought to a hospital where he passed later that morning. He was in the backseat of the car driven by his mother, who was unharmed.

Details regarding the confrontation that resulted in the shooting were not available immediately.

Police were investigating a string of BB or pellet gun incidents on the 91 Freeway in Riverside and Orange counties. According to the CHP, the deadly gunshot on Friday was unrelated to the previous shootings and resulted from a road rage dispute.
