After a fatal shooting in west Toledo, a 26-year-old man is in custody and charged with murder.
Officers were dispatched to the Hilltop Village Apartments in the 3500 block of Hilltop Boulevard on a “check the safety” call Tuesday afternoon after family members reported that 24-year-old Ashley Darrington failed to drop off her 2 kids, ages 1 and 2, at childcare that morning.
Officers arrived on the scene and discovered Darrington dead in her bedroom with at least one gunshot wound. Her two children were unharmed inside the house and are now in the care of relatives.
Police identified 26-year-old Robert Sherman as the suspect after conducting an investigation. Sherman and Darrington have kids together, according to police statements.
Sherman was just released from prison, where he was serving time for domestic violence against Darrington, according to WTOL 11. Sherman allegedly assaulted Darrington in April 2020, while she was 19 weeks pregnant with their second baby, according to a warrant of arrest.
The Lucas County Coroner’s Office conducted an autopsy on Darrington on Wednesday, which revealed that he was shot 5 times, which includes once in the head.
Sherman was arraigned in Toledo Municipal Court on Wednesday morning, and bail was set at $1 million. He is scheduled to show up in court again on February 23rd.
