'A parent came to the campus with a weapon and began waving it': Angry Mother Shot by School Police Officer After Bringing Weapon Up to School

According to Atlanta Public Schools, an angry mother was wounded by a school police officer after she came to the school with a firearm.

Police were called to Booker T. Washington High School about 4:30 p.m. Wednesday when a brawl broke out between female students as school let out.

“A parent came to the campus with a weapon and began waving it in the direction of students, employees and an Atlanta Public Schools Police Officer. The officer ordered the parent to drop the weapon. When the parent did not comply with the order, the officer fired one shot which struck the parent in the hand,” according to the district.

According to relatives, the mom went up to the school to protect her daughter and pulled out her pistol in self-defense.

A woman who did not want to be identified said a dispute between some girls began at school and afterwards poured onto her yard. She was also the mother of one of the girls involved in the brawl.

“Some girls came over and jumped my girls, and that’s how everything started,” she told Ashli Lincoln, a Channel 2 investigative reporter. “They were fighting in my yard, jumping my children.”

According to the mom who was shot’s sister, the homeowner threatened to shoot the woman’s daughter.

“They got fighting right in front of the house, the mother told my sister that she was going to shoot my niece,” Lincoln’s sister explained.

EMS was dispatched to the school, where the mother’s injuries were treated. The incident did not result in any other injuries.

“APS Police and Atlanta Police are conducting a full investigation of the incident, and the parent faces several charges. As this was an officer involved shooting, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation is investigating as well. The safety and well-being of our students and employees is always a top priority for all Atlanta Public Schools,” the district said.
