According to investigators, a Georgia woman visiting South Florida accidently shot her teen sister in the head while handing her a pistol inside a vehicle.
According to the Miami Herald, the shooting happened on a Miami Beach street late Sunday night. Taniyria Holt, 24, of Atlanta, has been detained and charged with culpable negligence that inflicts personal injury and improper exhibition of firearms.
Holt, the victim, and two other ladies were travelling in a Jaguar SUV when Holt accidently shot her 18-year-old sister Dre’naya Ponder in the head, according to her arrest affidavit. Investigators suspect it occurred as they were recording an Instagram video.
The pistol belonged to one of the other ladies inside the vehicle, according to investigators, but Holt was handling it and racking the firearm when she noticed a live shell being ejected.
She said she passed the gun to her sister, thinking it was empty, but the weapon discharged and hit Ponder.
Ponder was transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center and put on life support, according to authorities.
“Thinking the firearm was free of live rounds, Ms. Holt said she went to pass the firearm to her (redacted) but accidentally shot her,” the arrest report stated.
Holt is anticipated to face a manslaughter charge, according to authorities.
