Family Files $30M Civil Rights Lawsuit Over Deputies' Shooting of Black Man in North Carolina

According to a $30 million civil rights lawsuit filed Wednesday by the family of Andrew Brown Jr., an unarmed Black man, who was fatally shot by sheriff’s deputies in North Carolina, he died as a result of the officers’ “intentional and reckless disregard for his life.”

On April 21, Brown was shot while driving outside his home in Elizabeth City. At the time, deputies from a regional narcotics task team were serving a drug-related search warrant.

Brown’s family and counsel claimed he was fleeing, presented no threat, and had his hands were visible when he was fatally shot in the back of the head.

According to WRAL, Brown’s aunt, who is the administrator of his estate, filed the lawsuit, which names the Pasquotank and Dare County sheriffs, as well as seven Pasquotank County deputies who were present when Brown was killed.

New developments in Andrew Brown Jr. case

After Pasquotank County deputies killed Brown in April, family attorneys will launch a federal lawsuit. A hearing date for a request to release the body camera video has now been set by the sheriff’s office.
