On Friday morning, human remains were discovered in a barrel placed outside of a property in New Jersey.

According to neighbors who spoke to CBS New York, the barrel was left on the sidewalk, which was not uncommon for residents of the quiet street because trash pickup occurs on Fridays.

Officers from the Bergen County prosecutor’s office were dispatched to Ridgefield Park just after 10:30 a.m. Friday to investigate, according to the prosecutor’s office.

Human remains were discovered inside, according to prosecutors, who are investigating “the circumstances of the death and the source of the container.”

It’s unclear if the remains belong to a man or a woman. A forensic examination can confirm the person’s sex and, most likely, race.

Detectives from the Criminal Investigation Division and forensic anthropologists from the University of Tennessee are investigating, according to 10News.
