A man injured in a brazen daytime gunfight in central Hamilton has been arrested and is being held in hospital under guard while investigators look for the perpetrator who shot him.

On Friday, the Hamilton Police Service released surveillance video showing a man dressed in black hopping out of a car and firing several shots into a parked car with the driver’s door open.

Several shots are fired through the windshield of the parked car as he runs back to the vehicle and drives away, according to the video.

Police have not identified the first shooter, but say he was driving a black 2007 or 2008 Pontiac G5.

The 23-year-old Hamilton man, who remained in hospital in stable condition on Friday, is charged with the following:

  • Careless use of a firearm.
  • Unauthorized possession of a firearm.
  • Knowledge of unauthorized possession of a firearm.
  • Carrying a concealed weapon.
  • Occupying of motor vehicle knowing there was a firearm.
  • Discharging a firearm with intent.
  • Discharging a firearm with recklessness.

“Although it is unique to charge the victim, in this case our evidence shows the two people were shooting at each other in broad daylight,” Det.-Sgt. Jason Cattle said during a media update Friday afternoon.
