A former University of Miami football player who had a long history of feuding with Bryan Pata is now charged with killing the Hurricanes’ star player 15 years ago.

Rashaun Jones of Lake City was apprehended in Ocala with the help of U.S. Marshals, according to the Miami-Dade County Police Department and the state attorney’s office.

Jones, 35, is a former defensive back for the Hurricanes. According to authorities, he will face a charge of first-degree murder and is awaiting extradition to Miami-Dade County.

Jones was named as a possible suspect in a 2020 ESPN story, but no charges were filed until Thursday.

On Nov. 7, 2006, the 22-year-old Pata was shot in the back of the head while walking from his car to the stairwell at a apartment complex, according to detectives. This, according to police, was a premeditated killing.
