A lady has been detained in Ouachita Parish on suspicion of killing a man and a five-week-old baby in a car accident.

Candace Gill, 38, was suspected in a shoplifting investigation at Walmart in Monroe when the deadly crash occurred, according KNOE.

Officers were summoned to the Monroe Walmart Supercenter at 6 p.m. on Monday in response to a shoplifting report, according to court records. Two suspects, one of whom was carrying an infant, had since fled the area. Gill and Edward Williams were identified as the suspects.

According to court documents, Gill and Williams stole baby products from the business before fleeing when approached by store employees.

On Northeast Drive near Highway 165, the suspect’s car was seen shortly after. The suspect’s car then went onto Highway 165 and accelerated. A police officer “pursued the vehicle, using his lights and sirens, but it didn’t stop.” She sped down Highway 165 and crashed at Renwick, police say.

Gill escaped the crash scene unnoticed. On Tuesday night, she was apprehended in an apartment complex on Otis Street near West Monroe.

She was charged with two charges of manslaughter, aggravated blockage of a highway, four counts of negligent harm, theft, and several driving offenses.

Edward Williams, who was a passenger in Gill’s vehicle, passed away at the scene as a result of his wounds he suffered in the crash. A five-week-old child and daughter of Candace Gill also suffered severe injuries. The child was immediately taken to the hospital by the police where she later passed away. The Monroe Police Department believes the child was not properly restrained in the vehicle prior to the crash. At least two others suffered non-life-threatening injuries in a separate vehicle that was struck by Gill at the intersection.
