According to the US Attorney’s Office in Denver, a Colorado Springs woman is facing federal charges for distributing fentanyl, which resulted in the death of a young girl.
Alexis Wilkins, 26, was taken into custody on Tuesday. She is accused of distributing fentanyl that caused death.
Investigators discovered evidence that Wilkins sold one or two fentanyl pills to two girls in the parking lot of the Citadel Mall in Colorado Springs on December 2, according to a criminal complaint. According to court documents, the girls digested the pill or pills to Mitchell High School the next day, where they met in the restroom with another girl.
According to investigators, the third girl ingested at least a portion of the crushed pill. She passed away in class.
It’s unknown whether the other two girls took any of the pills.
Wilkins had been selling Percocet, a brand of oxycodone tablets, to one of the girls for several months, she told investigators. Investigators learned that the girl approached Wilkins on December 2 to organize the buying of two Percocet for a total of $40. According to court papers, the girl noticed the pills “looked different and were a lighter blue color than normal” when she received them.
Wilkins, according to investigators, was aware that she was selling fentanyl pills rather than “as opposed to a genuine prescription opioid like oxycodone.”
According to court papers, investigators discovered more than 100 blue pills as well as more than $7,000 in cash once they searched Wilkins’ apartment on Tuesday.
She could face a sentence of 20 years to life in prison and a fine of up to $1 million if convicted.
