A suspect, Gershon Fuentes, 27, of Columbus was charged with raping a 10-year-old girl in Ohio after a doctor said the girl had to go to Indiana for an abortion following the recent landmark ruling by the Supreme Court.
He confessed to sexually assaulting the child at least twice, according to the Columbus Dispatch.
Judge Cynthia Ebner set bail at $2 million for Fuentes, who is now being held at Franklin County jail and may be in the states illegally, according to the Dispatch. He is charged with felony rape.
Det. Jeffrey Huhn testified Wednesday morning at Fuentes’ arraignment that Columbus authorities were notified of the girl’s pregnancy through a referral by Franklin County Children Services filed by her mom on June 22.
Huhn said in court Wednesday that the girl had a medical abortion in Indianapolis on June 30, according to the Columbus Dispatch, a Gannett sister daily that has been working on the story alongside IndyStar.
Huhn said that DNA from the Indianapolis clinic is being compared to Fuentes samples.
Huhn testified that the 10-year-old informed police that Fuentes was responsible for her pregnancy.
