San Diego County authorities have released the bodycam video of a deputy that accidentally overdosed and nearly died after being exposed to fentanyl last month.

Deputy David Faiivae found a bag of white powder on July 3rd in San Marcos. Even though he was in training at the time, he responded to the call with his field training officer, Cpl. Scott Crane.

Crane warned Faiivae about how dangerous handling narcotics could be in the bodycam video. Narcan nasal spray had to be put up Faiivae’s nose to save his life.

According to the US Drug Enforcement Administration, fentanyl is a synthetic opioid that is 50 times more potent than heroin and 100 times more potent than morphine.

The San Diego County Medical Examiner reported 151 fentanyl-related overdose deaths in 2019, and the number nearly tripled to more than 460 deaths last year. Officials believe the county will have more than 700 fentanyl-related deaths this year, according to KTLA.
