On April 2, DMX had an overdose at his house and was brought to the hospital, shocking the world.

“It was cardiac arrest for a period of time, so there was no circulation to the brain,” an insider from the Westchester County medical examiner’s office informed Vulture. According to the source, acute cocaine intoxication was the cause of the fatal chain of events.

“His death literally happened immediately because the brain was dead,” the source noted. “So obviously, there were a number of days where he was on ventilatory support and so forth in the hospital . . . However, he was diagnosed brain-dead early on . . . He never woke up from [a] coma.”

His family issued a heartfelt message following his death.

“We are deeply saddened to announce today that our loved one, DMX, birth name of Earl Simmons, passed away at 50 years old at White Plains Hospital with his family by his side after being placed on life support for the past few days. Earl was a warrior who fought till the very end,” they said.

“He loved his family with all of his heart and we cherish the times we spent with him. Earl’s music inspired countless fans across the world and his iconic legacy will live on forever. We appreciate all of the love and support during this incredibly difficult time,” the family continued. “Please respect our privacy as we grieve the loss of our brother, father, uncle, and the man the world knew as DMX.”

Kanye West’s Sunday Service Choir sang at his memorial service at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center, along with emotional tributes from friends and family.
