Two East Nashville grandparents are facing first-degree murder charges in connection with their 20-month-old grandson’s fentanyl-related death last year.

Charles Allen Sr., 80, and Yolanda Newsome, 58, were arrested Thursday at their apartment on South 7th Street.

According to police, Allen and Newsome were caring for 20-month-old Korran Newsome on August 6 while his mom was at her job.

Korran was placed in bed with the grandparents that night, and upon his return from work, Newsome informed his mom that Korran was not breathing.

At the scene, Korran was given cardiopulmonary resuscitation. He was then rushed to Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital, where he died.

The medical examiner determined that the cause of death was acute fentanyl intoxication after conducting toxicology testing. According to authorities, Korran had enough fentanyl in his system to kill an adult.

They admitted to purchasing heroin off the street after speaking with both grandparents.

According to police, they permitted Korran to become exposed to heroin laced with fentanyl while in their care, particularly in their bed.

Allen is currently being held on a $150,000 bond, while Newsome is being held on a $100,000 bond.
