You couldn’t help but congratulate Keishia Thorpe, the Global Teacher Prize winner, if you saw it.

Every year, a $1 million prize is given to a teacher who has made a significant contribution to education.

“It was amazing. It was such a proud moment for me,” said Thorpe, who teaches at the International High School at Langley Park, Maryland, in suburban Washington, D.C.

Thorpe has stated that the funds will be used to expand educational possibilities for youngsters all across the world. And, while she confesses that the victory moment seemed to proceed at a snail’s pace, that is in stark contrast to her hectic existence, which moves at the speed of a hummingbird’s wings.

She coaches students in track and field when she is not teaching in the classroom (often putting in 70-hour work weeks). It’s an appropriate haven for a former collegiate runner who advanced all the way to the Olympic trials, representing her native Jamaica.

Following a time as a tutor for low-income children, Thorpe gained the “bug” to teach during her college years on a track scholarship at Howard University in Washington, D.C.

“Every student deserve the right to an education,” says Thorpe, “and I want to be that person who championed that for them.”
