According to federal health officials, Florida has reported 21,683 new cases of COVID-19, the state’s highest one-day total since the outbreak began, reported WESH.

The state set the new record after becoming a new centerpiece for the virus, responsible for nearly a fifth of all new cases in the U.S.. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has opposed mandatory mask and vaccine mandates, and he and the Florida Legislature have limited local officials’ ability to impose COVID-19-prevention initiatives.

The CDC data released on Saturday demonstrated how quickly the number of cases in Florida is increasing.

Only a day before, Florida reported approximately 17,000 new daily cases.
